I spent a week thinking about how to shoot a Thanksgiving meal. After shooting my son for almost a year, I've learned that changing the altitude of the shot changes the perspective so much. I came up with the idea to shoot the Thanksgiving meal from above.
The set up was simple, but made my wife nervous. I zip-tied my strobe to the chain of our dining room light. I then (luckily) discovered that the stud on my light stand that my umbrella adapter screws into is also the same size as the tripod mount on my camera. Since my light stand is an 8' stand, that gave me the elevation I needed. Everything else was "chimp and check" with a remote shutter release.
Did the pictures turn out quite right? No. It's tough to gauge where people sit during the meal, how they lean, where they put their chairs. The chandelier also got in the way. The pictures weren't amazing, but the creative process was.
I had much more fun cooking and hosting the meal.
